ERIE, PA – First Place was awarded to the American Srbobran in the 2001 Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress Newspaper/Magazine contest, it was announced last month. The paper, which is the oldest and largest continually published newspaper, has achieved a new level with this recognition. The award was given for “excellence in presentation style and overall communicative skills” for a newspaper format of more than eight pages. In a phone call to Sandi Tumbas Radoja, English Section editor, Cindy Zinram of the Pennsylvania Fraternal Congress announced the award. “I think I have some very good news for you,” Zinram said. A plaque was delivered to Radoja, who in turn presented it to the Serb National Federation at the meeting of the SNF Executive Board in Pittsburgh, November 17. The plaque will be on permanent display at the SNF Museum and Library. “This really was a great honor,” said Radoja, “but not to me alone. The credit goes to a lot of people who have worked together to continually improve the paper. Tracy Weir, our layout artist, has done a fantastic job. She has worked wonders with the presentation. Also, we’ve had some fantastic contributors whose work makes this paper interesting and varied – well worth reading. And, it’s to the credit of the Executive Board that the paper continues its tradition of Cyrillic content. All in all, it’s nice to see the American Srbobran get this respect and appreciation.”
